58 year old woman who was bothered by her nasolabial foldsor the "parentheses' around her mouth (the folds running from the corners of her nose to the corners of her mouth). She was counseled by Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. Achih H. Chen that the nasolabial fold is a normal structure that is present in even young faces. The appearance of deepening of the nasolabial fold is caused by deflation of the mid-face or cheek region with subsequent sagging much like what occurs when a balloon looses air. Traditionally, the aging of the mid-face was treated by a lifting and tightening procedure, the mid-facelift. This resulted in flattening and widening of the mid-face and cheek region, creating an unnatural appearance. Dr. Chen observed that youthful faces have a natural fullness in the mid-face area. As a result, restoring the lost volume creates a much more natural-appearing result than lifting and tightening of the mid-face.
