Injectable Anti-Aging Treatments

At our suburban Augusta, Georgia, practice people come to Dr. Chen looking for injectable treatments to erase those crow’s feet, smooth those frown lines, soften those forehead creases. Without a doubt, the most popular use of neuromodulators such as these is for the treatment of wrinkles. But injectable neuromodulators don’t just erase wrinkles. Neuromodulators can also be used in the prevention of certain kinds of wrinkles.

Many of the muscles of facial expression are located just under the skin. When we frown or squint or raise our eyebrows, the overlying skin folds. Over time, the repeated folding of the skin results in permanent creases or wrinkles such as crow’s feet. Treating these areas with neuromodulators can prevent the repeated creasing of the skin and the resulting dynamic wrinkle.*

What Is a Neuromodulator?

Neuromodulators are a natural, purified protein that temporarily weakens muscles which cause wrinkles and fine lines on the face, leading to a smoother, more youthful aesthetic appearance. This injectable treatment can also be used to produce a temporary brow lift effect when the muscles that pull downward on the eyebrows are treated. Eyebrow position is determined by a “tug of war” between the muscles that pull up and the muscles that pull down. Treating the muscles that pull down will allow the muscles that pull up to be stronger, causing a temporary elevation in the brows.*

Neuromodulators can also be used to treat the muscular bands that form in front of the neck. Treatment of these bands will allow those muscles to relax, causing the bands to temporarily disappear.* In individuals with very round faces, neuromodulators can be used to produce a more angular face by weakening some of the muscles that support the cheek fat, thereby allowing it to temporarily sit deeper in the face and provide a better proportioned facial aesthetic balance.*

Women and men who want facial rejuvenation with a treatment that is less invasive than facelift or mid-facelift procedures can find a quick solution with these popular injectable enhancements.* The results of these injections are apparent within the first few days of treatment, and the procedure can be performed over your lunch hour.*

Other Neuromodulator Uses

Beyond wrinkles and fine lines, neuromodulators  can also be used to reduce excessive perspiration. Areas that are most commonly treated include the underarms, the palms, or the feet. The treatment effect for excessive sweating lasts much longer than when using neuromodulators to treat wrinkles.* Typically, individuals only require 1 to 2 treatments per year to effectively decrease the perspiration in the problem area.*

The Origins of Neuromodulators

Neuromodulators are made from the protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It is the same protein that causes botulism, but the amount used for cosmetic purposes is far smaller than the amount that causes botulism. Approximately 35 bottles of injectable neuromodulator used at the same time would be necessary to reach those levels. Typically, only one-fourth of a bottle of neuromodulator is used in cosmetic procedures. Neuromodulator injections have been safely used by physicians since the 1970s.

Procedure

We can complete treatment with neuromodulators  in a matter of minutes. No significant post-procedure discomfort is described by our patients.* After anesthetizing and cooling the skin with a cold air stream produced by a Zimmer Chiller, Achih H. Chen, M.D. will use a very small needle to administer the neuromodulator into the target areas.

The protein in neuromodulators  works by temporarily blocking the signal that travels between the nerve and the muscle, resulting in a temporarily weakened muscle. This prevents the formation of lines and creases in the treated areas, smoothing out the skin and producing a more youthful appearance.*

Recovery

After the procedure, it is important to avoid massaging the treated area, as doing so can disperse the neuromodulator into unintended areas. After 2 to 3 hours, normal activity can be resumed, and no special care is required.* Very rarely, there can be a small amount of bruising in the treated area that quickly resolves.* Commonly, it is difficult to even identify the area treated.* The aesthetic effects of neuromodulators are not immediate but can typically be seen approximately 2 days after treatment.* The effect reaches its maximum strength at 2 weeks.* The results of neuromodulators  usually last approximately 3 months.*

It is important to schedule your neuromodulator treatment at least 2 to 3 weeks prior to any important events so that the results of treatment are completely visible.*

*Individual results and recovery may vary.
